  1. The Circle of Courage model is built upon First Nations' beliefs that it takes a community to raise a child. In my definition of what a school is, the structure of the school building does not dictate what a school is. By including the various partners in the schooling of a child, we begin to see how the community can contribute to raising that child.

What happens in the four walls of the structure of the school is important, extremely important, but what happens with the interactions at home and in the outside community carries great importance too. At the high school level students may take part in work experience courses or other classes where they may be asked to interact with others outside the school. These interactions can provide excellent learning experiences for the students.

These outside experiences outside the school may involve working on hands-on projects. These projects would provide opportunities for the students to greatly benefit from a Circle of Courage model. The four quadrants of the model lend themselves well to a student progressing in their competence with a skill they are trying to achieve.

The Circle of Courage model would benefit any student in any course if the Independence and sense of Belonging were enhanced. Too often students are left to feel alienated in the high school environment where they can at times begin to feel like just another number.

Belonging and Independence would seem to be dichotomous in their nature. However, one can develop their own sense of independence yet appreciate the fact that they belong to something greater than just themselves.

Generosity allows students to feel that they can make a contribution to the greater community and that their contribution will be appreciated.

  2. In terms of the ability for the community and school to network, the Circle of Courage is certainly a way for students' work in the community to be integrated into their education. Work experience would greatly enhance the students abilities to be enriched under the Circle of Courage model. By working in an area where the student in intrinsically motivated to work, they can see the rewards of their work and enjoy going to work/school each day. Student absenteeism would become less of an issue if the student had such intrinsic motivation to attend.
