Module 2: Reflection Questions

2. While the Circle of Courage outlines the basic principles or aims of education, it does not go any further in describing how those aims might be put into practice. List and describe effective practices that your school is already doing that would promote each of the components of the model.

  1. As mentioned in my previous reflection, our school and indeed entire school system's Shared Values rather closely mirror the Circle of Courage model. However, with my school's academic focus and middle- to upper-middle class demographic, we have a highly competitive culture in the school. This is most obviously actualized in the scholarships awarded each year. These scholarships total over $1 000 000 each year and become the focus for a large portion of the student body. Competition rather than generosity can be felt by the rest of the students and this makes its way even to the teachers who are regularly faced with questions about their evaluation.

On the other hand, our school is also known for its involvement in a local radio station's Adopt A Family drive at Christmas each year. This school regularly adopts over 50 families in the Regina area. A significant amount of money is raised but largely, again, through competitions held in the school. Generosity through competition - paradoxical!
