4. What is the relationship between the Circle of Courage Model and SchoolPLUS?

  1. Upon closer examination of the the two models, Circle of Courage and SchoolPLUS, we can see that SchoolPLUS could appear to have the Circle of Courage at its very heart.

    The Circle of Courage strives to develop the whole child based on four very strong philosophical strands: Belonging, Mastery, Independence and Generosity. These stands attempt to develop a child's entire self. In Circle of Courage philosophy, the child is presented with perhaps "the most effective forms of Positive Discipline ever." (Brokenleg, 1990, p.35)

  2. "SchoolPlus is a province-wide initiative led by Ministry of Education and the provincial education system that promotes learning success and well-being for every child and young person." (SchoolPLUS website, 2008)

    The goals of SchoolPLUS are quoted here from the SchoolPLUS website with the provincial government.
    * are welcoming, caring and respectful;
    * actively engage youth, families and communities;
    * focus on providing every student with access to high quality learning opportunities, reaching out to those who have left the school system;
    * are centres of integrated supports for children, youth and families to strengthen both educational success and well-being;
    * support effective transitions into and through the education system, and to post-secondary education and the labour market; and,
    * use resources available to them such as enhanced technology and e-learning.

    One can see that with Circle of Courage at its core, a SchoolPLUS environment would provide all students with the conditions that would help them achieve at their greatest potential.
